Mostar airport and flights to Mostar

Mostar has its own small airport, but most visitors land at Dubrovnik, Split or Sarajevo and finish the journey on the ground. Here is how to decide.

Mostar’s own airport

Mostar International Airport (IATA code OMO, ICAO code LQMO) sits in Ortiješ, about 7.4 km from Mostar railway station. That measurement is to the station, not the Old Town, so treat it as a rough guide to how close it is. This is a small regional airport, not a hub, and its flights are seasonal.

That shapes the planning. A direct flight, when one suits your dates, saves the longest leg of the trip. But a route that runs this summer may not run next summer, so do not build a holiday around a flight you have not booked. The airport’s own website, mostar-airport.ba, is the place to check what is scheduled, and an airline search for your dates will show the rest.

Our getting to Mostar page sets this against the other ways in. If you find nothing convenient into Mostar, the next three sections cover the alternatives.

Flights to Mostar: what we can and cannot say

We are deliberately not listing airlines here. Wikipedia’s airport page names several carriers and destinations, but it is a reference page, not a timetable, and the list goes out of date quickly. Seasonal airports add and drop routes with little notice, and an out-of-date list is worse than none.

What you can rely on is the pattern. Expect a limited number of flights, mostly in the warmer months, and expect to compare them against flying to a larger airport and travelling on. Look at the total journey time and cost, not just the flight. Add the transfer at each end, the border if you cross one, and the cost of a night’s stay if the last connection leaves too early. A cheap flight into Dubrovnik plus a bus can beat an awkward connection, and the reverse can be true if a direct flight lines up with your dates.

We could not verify taxi fares or a bus link, so we give no prices. Ask your accommodation whether they can arrange a pick-up, and read our where to stay page for how the town is laid out.

Dubrovnik airport and onward

Dubrovnik is the usual choice for people who want Mostar as a side trip from the Croatian coast. It has plenty of flights, and the town is across the border from Mostar.

  • By bus. FlixBus lists a minimum of 3 h 15 from Dubrovnik bus station and two departures a day, the first listed at 16:00 and the last at 17:15. Border formalities add time, so plan for a longer day than the timetable suggests.
  • By car or tour. Both are options if you would rather not rely on those departures.

We have not verified the distance from Dubrovnik airport to Mostar, so we give none. Our Dubrovnik to Mostar page compares the bus, a tour, a hire car and a private transfer, and explains the border and the Neum strip. Take your passport: Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the EU and the Schengen area.

Split airport and onward

Split works well if you are travelling along the coast and want a longer stay in Mostar.

FlixBus lists a minimum of 3 h 30 from Split bus station to Mostar, with three trips a day. It runs to Mostar’s East or West bus station, so check which one your ticket uses. We have not verified the distance from Split airport to Mostar or the transfer between airport and bus station. The Split to Mostar page goes through the options in detail.

If you are hiring a car at Split, read our car hire and driving page first, because the paperwork for taking a car into Bosnia and Herzegovina matters.

Sarajevo airport and onward

Sarajevo suits a trip through Bosnia rather than a coastal trip with a Mostar detour.

The ŽFBH Talgo train runs Sarajevo to Mostar in about 2 hours over 129 km. Seat61 lists two departures each way a day, from Sarajevo at 07:15 and 16:46, though you should check current times at zfbh.ba before you travel. Because those times are fixed, a late flight into Sarajevo may mean an overnight stay before you catch the morning train. We have not verified the distance between Sarajevo airport and the railway station, so check that before you rely on a tight connection.

The Sarajevo to Mostar page covers the train and the other options.

Which should you choose?

Choose Mostar’s own airport if a flight fits your dates and you value the shortest transfer. Choose Dubrovnik if you want to see the coast first, Split for a longer coastal trip, and Sarajevo if you want to travel through Bosnia and take the train.

A few practical points apply to all three. Buy the onward ticket for a time that leaves slack after landing, because border formalities and delayed flights both eat into a tight connection. Check which Mostar bus station your ticket uses, East (Istočni kolodvor) or West (Zapadni kolodvor), and where that sits relative to your accommodation. If you plan to hire a car instead, the getting to Mostar page and our car hire guide explain the paperwork before you commit.

Whichever you choose, remember the paperwork. UK visitors do not need a visa for up to 90 days in any 6 months, but your passport must meet GOV.UK’s validity rules, and you should get an entry and exit stamp. The full rules are on our entry requirements page.

Once you arrive, our Old Bridge guide and itineraries will help you use the time.
